The Sailing Ship: A Poem

The Sailing Ship: A Poem

Sail ahead to distant shores when yonder morning breaks
with wind at your back, listen to the cry that the screeching seagull makes
and sail on into waters of deep crystal blue
venture forth to destinations new
It is a time when the world is wide
so beckon to the surging tide

The mast is your guide
to horizons wide
white sails against skies of blue
they’re your towers- the world to view
and take the brunt of gray skies and stormy seas too

Poseidon’s realm stretches most of the globe
the sites to be seen- what tales to be told
Dolphins and Krakens, mermaids and sirens
aquatic femme fatales- they be a bitin’
Inviting you to Davy Jones’ locker- grave of missing Titan

This is the age of true adventure
where shark makes of mate’s leg a gaping denture
Whales spout
fish about
The salt sprays against your face
calm waters reflect an amazing grace

Today planes fly higher than eagles
Subs go lower than deep diving seagulls
Realms of pavement stretch from coast to coast
And space rockets soar high- making the air burnt toast

Speed here, speed there
instant speed everywhere
It should feel dizzy in this speeding vortex
but it moves so fast, we don’t even flex

Tall ships now exist only in books
or big toys built by would-be Captain Cooks
The seas are no longer the wild frontier
of siren call and mermaid tear
they are but memories of yesteryear

    Excellent poem as always, Chris.
Reminded me a few of your blogs on pirates poems you wrote not so long ago.
And I thought there is Moby Dick somewhere there with the sharks! LOL

    • Dracul Van Helsing said,

Yes, I’ve written quite a few pirate poems like this. 🙂

And yes, Moby Dick is there amongst the sharks. LOL !

And Captain Ahab shouts, “Anybody seen my leg. I was just wearing it a moment ago.”

And Jezebel a Phoenician princess passenger on the ship says, “You should just be thankful that you didn’t lose what Osiris lost.” 😀

      • ѕнєяяιє ∂є ναℓєяια said,

        wah hahahaha …
If that happens, then Captain Ahab will have to expect a wooden phallus later for his lost part!

Or perhaps today one can do plastic surgery for plastic phallus!

        ♨(⋆‿⋆)♨

      • Dracul Van Helsing said,

Yes back in Captain Ahab’s day, he would have had to use a wooden phallus just like Osiris did in Egypt many millennia ago.

And today Donald Trump can probably use a plastic phallus for his lost part. 😀

      • ѕнєяяιє ∂є ναℓєяια said,

Trumpy must have loads of dildo collection at home. One of it are specially made with a spider monkey hair on it! LOL

      • Dracul Van Helsing said,

Yes, indeed a plastic dildo with red spider monkey hairs on it.

A banana that most monkeys would not dare put in their mouths. 😀

      • ѕнєяяιє ∂є ναℓєяια said,

        WAH AHAHAHAHA … Geeezzz …
        Poor monkeys!

      • Dracul Van Helsing said,

Yes, poor monkeys! LOL ! 😀

I love your poem & I love the age of sail (Well, reading/watching movies about it anyways!). Tall ships, seas, and mermaids – your poem painted a lovely image in my mind. Nice writing!

    • Dracul Van Helsing said,

      Thanks very much, Sara. 🙂

Yes, I love watching movies about the age of sail as well.

      • Sara Flower Kjeldsen said,

That’s awesome! 🙂 I wish that they made more.

      • Dracul Van Helsing said,

        Yes, so do I. 🙂

I think my favourite movie that featured a sailing ship was a film from the early 1950s that starred James Mason and Ava Gardner called Pandora and The Flying Dutchman.

It was based on the old legend of The Flying Dutchman. 🙂

      • Sara Flower Kjeldsen said,

Ok, nice! I will have to check that one out. 🙂 It sounds interesting. I really liked Master & Commander: The Far Side of The World & wished that they made more movies from the Aubrey Maturin series. But I’ll have to check out Pandora and The Flying Dutchman. 🙂

      • Dracul Van Helsing said,

I also liked the Errol Flynn movies where he played a pirate.

And in terms of more recent films, I always enjoy the Pirates of the Caribbean movies with Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow.

      • Sara Flower Kjeldsen said,

Oh my gosh Johnny Depp is amazing as Jack Sparrow! And it’s a very fun series of films. 🙂 I’ve got to check out the Errol Fynn films, too!

      • Dracul Van Helsing said,

The Errol Flynn pirate films were really great swashbuckling tales. 🙂

      • Sara Flower Kjeldsen said,

Nice! *Adds them to my list* 🙂

      • Dracul Van Helsing said,

If you get TCM (Turner Classic Movies) as a channel, they often show great old time movies like the Errol Flynn pirate films. 🙂
