Mermaid’s Tears and The Ocean

It was but a drop in the ocean
He reflected
As he emptied a mermaid’s tear

A mermaid’s tear kept in a tiny bottle
By an elderly aunt
Who had been given the tiny bottle as a child by her father
And was told that what appeared to be a tear inside was a mermaid’s tear

That elderly aunt had passed away
a few weeks ago
And the bequest given to him
Was he was to take the bottle
And empty the tear back into the ocean
So that somehow the mermaid’s tear
Would be reunited with its owner

A drop in the ocean it was
And the mermaid’s tear quickly disappeared in the surging tide

Sail away, sail away oh mermaid’s tear
Among the currents and ebbs of the sea
And return to the eye that shed thee
Considered but a drop in the ocean
In this eternity

He turned and there standing on the beach
Was a friend of his
The Lakota Sioux Princess Tanaka

She looked at him,
How kind of you to return a mermaid’s tear to the sea
She kissed him
And they embraced

Seeing the sight
from distant ocean waves
Mermaids wept
… tears of joy

I have been watching a Korean series ‘Legend of the Blue Sea’ where Mermaids tear turns into a pearl.
A beautiful story you have written here with a happy ending. Tears of joy 🙂

Thank you very much, Kritika. 🙂

That sounds like a beautiful Korean series Legend of The Blue Sea.

I like the idea of mermaids’ tears becoming pearls. ❤

You wrote this wonderfully.. I’ve always loved the ideas presented in mermaid lore since Daryl Hannah and Tom Hanks Splash film in the 90s. There was another one but can’t remember the name… a very old film.

    • Dracul Van Helsing said,

      Thanks, Candy. 🙂

There was a film made in 1948 called Mr. Peabody and The Mermaid that starred William Powell and Ann Blyth.

      Would that be the one?

      • Candy L said,

I’m not sure it ws that old if I’m honest, think it was more early 90s. I still havent remembered what film😆

Hm, no I can’t recall the name of a ’90s mermaid film.

Just the other day, I was reading a movie review about a 2018 film called The Lighthouse.

There’s apparently a mermaid in it.

And from this review I read, it sounds like a very intriguing film.

I thought for a while it was Aquamarine but I feel like it wasn’t. Remember seeing bits of it as a child and it was kinda a coming of age romantic vibe with a teen boy who falls in love with a mermaid… ive been researching just now as its still bugging me lol.

Haven’t heard of The Lighthouse, ill look it up. I wish they came out with a dark, mysterious magical mermaid film now. If done right it would be amazing.

      • Dracul Van Helsing said,

The Lighthouse sounds like a dark mysteious film.

The mermaid in it seems more like an aquatic femme fatale than an easy going mermaid girl that a guy falls romantically in love with.

I’m a bit of a horror/dark film fanatic so ill give it a watch for tonight.

      • Dracul Van Helsing said,

Yes, it sounds like a horror tale featuring a mermaid.

So you’ll probably enjoy it. 😀
