Atargatis In Alexandria

In the courtyard of the Royal Alexandria Hotel
she sat
the Syro-Phoenician goddess Atargatis
on a late June evening in 1939

Although the sands of time
In various hourglasses
kept turning over
This way and that

The Egyptian god Thoth passed by
holding keys of Time
She saw a man named Quentin Talbot
encounter Thessalonike of Macedon
The half-sister of Alexander the Great
a couple of nights ago in the hotel ballroom

Then the scene shifted to a beach at Dunwich in Suffolk
where Thessalonike was about to sacrifice Quentin
to the old Celtic gods
on a June evening in 2020.

Dracul Van Helsing arrived to save Quentin
from being sacrificed
The next thing Atargatis knew
was she saw Van Helsing
making out with her own daughter Semiramis
In the upper bedroom
Of a Dunwich pub and inn.

Seated in an armchair and holding a spectral glass of spectral red wine
And watching the mortal-immortal sexual encounter on the bed
Was the ghost of Orson Welles
Who said,
Being a peep and watching this makes me feel like King Leer
A voyeur of some importance.

The scene vanished again
And she saw Adolf Hitler encountering Josef Stalin
In an Egyptian tomb
that had been transferred to the dungeon of Castle Dracula
in Transylvania

Hitler and Stalin were playing a chess game
For controlling America in the year 2020
The young Chinese Communist revolutionary Mao Tse-tung
dropped by
And told Hitler to use his white knight to crush a black pawn

Der Fuhrer like all racists
thought all Asians looked the same
And mistaking Mao for one of his Japanese allies
followed the future Chairman Mao’s advice

Stalin moved in for the kill
As Mao applauded
General Robert E. Lee’s battle flag of Northern Virginia
went up in flames across a map of the American south
Followed by the Stars and Stripes going up in flames
Across a map of the entire United States of America
Soon to be replaced by the Hammer and Sickle.

Atargatis leaned back on her chaise lounge as the combined scorpion and Phoenix fan above her kept her cool

A shadow fell across her.
She opened her eyes.
“Van Helsing, I presume?”
She said to the man standing alongside the chaise lounge.

Orson Welles’ ghost found himself in the Royal Alexandria Hotel courtyard
“Once again, I’m a witness… I’m a witness…”
He rang the bell alongside his chaise lounge
to summon the hotel porter to bring him a glass of red wine.

  1. Judy Kim said,

I like both the poem and the image.

  2. Jessica said,

Geez, the ghost of Orson is such a perv. πŸ˜„

    • Dracul Van Helsing said,

      That’s very true, Jessica. 😁

Orson’s ghost is going to have to spend a lot more time in Pugatory for being such a perv. πŸ˜‚

  3. Kritika said,

Enjoyed reading the poem. The image is interesting.

  4. George F. said,

Van Helsing making out with her own daughter Semiramis…you wish. I wish. An immortal sex scene is what I need right now! Loved the chess game too!

You have always been politically brilliant, I might say, my friend!
    No one is like you.
Neither is one like our friend Daniel as well.
We are the TRIO of wonders, I dare say.
You are so gifted in such and Daniel is and has always been the Master Dragon.
Where else I have always been that Dragon Snake Lady who had lived a thousand times over in so many stories I have wrote … my Soul travelled through it all …

    Missing you much!
    And Daniel as well.

*** Forgive me for not having much time for you. I have responsibilities here until all is settle down soon. I hope. I haven’t write for ages as work is calling. I know soon it will be finish. Then, I shall return with full glory. I do hope so.***

Oh, by the way … I just passed by Hyperion’s Dominion.
His poem is most brilliant I have ever read.
Fell in love with his passion as a person and a human being.
    What a Masterpiece it is!
    Indeed, truly!

    • Dracul Van Helsing said,

      Thank you, Sherrie.

Yes, Daniel’s poem is truly a masterpiece.

Yes, I’ve missed your writing, Sherrie but I imagine things are quite hectic over in Germany with the lockdown and the pandemic and everything else going on.

The world does seem to be heading towards a crescendo and my writing is picking up on the waves of the sea and the rhythms of the orchestra as they move towards that crescendo.

Looking forward to the day when you and Daniel and I go back to be being the 3 Blogoteers.

WOW – just adore this one!!

    • Dracul Van Helsing said,

Thank you very much, Jan. πŸ™‚

Yes, one can never go wrong when one brings Orson Welles’ ghost into the story. πŸ˜€

  7. Kally said,

Your words are so profound and deep. Full of meaning and emotions.

  8. David Redpath said,

Could it be that Dracul Van Helsing
    is Nimrod’s sire, after giving
    Semiramis a Babylonian prodding!?
