The RMS Lusitania: A Poem

The RMS Lusitania: A Poem

In 1915, she was the most famous ship in the world and the jewel in Liverpool’s crown,
At 2:09 PM off the Old Head of Kinsale, Ireland- no one expected to drown
But the captain of the German U-boat U-20 had already decided their fate
and at 2:10 PM, Walther Schwieger gave the order, for many aboard their date with Death would not be late
There were 1,959 souls aboard and of these 1,198 would never again see the lights of home
Their lives would end beneath the seas of spraying waves and foam
She had set sail from New York bound for her home port of Liverpool
This queen of the seas that Cunard saw as its bright and shining jewel
But it was a time of war and not of peace
a time when the beat of the heart of human kindness will often cease
One man decided to add civilians to be targets of war
and in the century that followed waves of civilian blood would pour and pour and pour
Only 761 souls would survive after that fatal torpedo was shot
but in years ahead not many would survive what the opening of those Gates of Hell had wrought.
