Greek goddess Amphitrite answers the call of the sea

The year was 1810.

The place was a cliff on England’s Cornish coast.

And Amphitrite the wife of Poseidon and the Greek goddess of the sea happened to be sitting on a cliff playing her lyre.

She had been doing her global daily swim across the world’s oceans and seas when she suddenly felt a new melody entering her mind.

She had left the salty waters deciding to compose this new melody on land.

As she sat there playing her lyre and composing her melody, the waves of the sea suddenly started pounding beneath her and a storm came up.

She could hear the dolphins and the mermaids of the sea calling for her.

Some undersea emergency had come up and the dolphins and the mermaids
wanted her help.

She jumped up.

And then dove into the sea.

Leaving her lyre behind.

Lord Peter Pendlebrook had been walking along the cliffs of Cornwall and had noticed the woman who he didn’t know was a goddess.

He had heard her playing her lyre and thought, “What a lovely melody.”

He then noticed the seas suddenly becoming stormy.

“A sudden change in the weather,” Lord Peter Pendlebrook commented as he checked the barometer that sat atop his hat.

Then he suddenly noticed the woman diving into the sea.

“No, no, no!” Lord Peter Pendlebrook cried, “Don’t end it all. Life is worth living. Let’s talk.”

He came to the edge of the cliff and looked down sadly.

The waves churned and roared beneath him.

“I don’t suppose she survived the fall,” Lord Peter Pendlebrook thought mournfully to himself, “If I dive in to try to save her, it will be two deaths instead of one.”

Pendlebrook picked up the woman’s lyre and then walked back to his carriage some distance away which returned him to the inn where he was staying.

As he sat in the carriage, Lord Peter (who had a very good ear for music) played the melody on the lyre that he had heard the woman playing before she jumped.

“Strange,” he thought to himself, “Such a joyful melody she had been playing before she jumped. Makes one wonder why she jumped.”

Far away Amphitrite had answered the call of the sea.

The problems facing the dolphins and mermaids had been solved.

Thus the seas calmed down.

The only problem was she had left her lyre behind on that cliff.

She returned to fetch it.

But it was gone.

“I hope whoever took it will be very happy,” she said and dove back into the sea.
